SIBYL EILEEN CARROLL
CRANE: Sibyl Eileen Normand Carroll left this life on March 6, 2009. She was born March 21, 1918 in Melvin, Texas to James and Olla Mae Normand, and married Arlon Carroll on May 29, 1939 in Brady, Texas.
Sibyl was preceded in death in January of this year by her beloved husband of almost 70 years, and by her parents, her brother Kenneth Normand, and grandson Paul Prather. She is survived by one son James Carroll and wife Darlene of Alvin, Texas, and two daughters, Ann Goggans of Crane and Betty and husband Bill Abbott of San Angelo; five grandchildren Carla and husband Mark Malone, Michelle Handy, Arlon Paul Carroll, Brent Carroll and Danna and husband Chris Ryan; 9 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
After graduating from high school in Melvin, Sibyl went to school in San Antonio to become a beautician. She and Arlon lived in Sonora until he was drafted during World War II. During his two-year absence, she continued to work as a beautician, moving with two small children to Melvin and later to McCamey Texas, where Arlon joined her after the war ended.
In 1947 Sibyl and Arlon moved to Crane, where she owned and operated a beauty shop for many years, then went back to school to become a licensed nurse. Throughout her life Sibyl was an accomplished artist, art teacher, piano teacher, expert seamstress, and collector of antiques. She loved nature, and she and Arlon enjoyed camping, sightseeing and hiking throughout the United States and Western Canada. She was a member of the Mary Street Church of Christ for more than 60 years.
Viewing will be Monday and Tuesday at the Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home in Crane. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Mary Street Church of Christ.
