Roylene Chandler Davis

Roylene McIlhaney Chandler Davis, 75, received her wings as she left to be with her Lord and Savior, October 26, 2013 at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, TX. She is preceded in death by late husbands Lawrence "Chan" Chandler in 1991 and Jay Vernon Davis in 2010, her parents; James "Roy" and Hallie "Corkie" McIlhaney, sister; Thelma Francis Holly and friend Glenda Taylor. Those left to cherish her memory are daughter; Chana and husband Sal Holguin, son; Lawrence "Hamp" and wife Sue Ellen Chandler, brother; Rayford and wife Jerrie McIlhaney, niece; Sherry and husband Tommy Gentry, nephews; Kerry McIlhaney, Chuck Flora, Billy Flora and Lanny Ray, Grandchildren; Hayley Chandler, Tiffani and husband Adam Molina and Eric Holguin. Honorary grandchildren; Abby, Makayla, Austin and Brandon Velasquez and Meranie Holguin. Great grandchildren; Hayden and Haeven Jaye Molina and special friend Debbie Jones. Roylene was a McCamey Badger from elementary until her passing, also having graduated MHS in 1957. She worked for the Upton County Sheriffs Department for a number of years, retiring in 2002. Roylene was crowned First Lady of McCamey in 1975, she received the Chamber of Commerce outstanding service award, True McCameyite award, the Decoration of Chilvary from the Rebekah Assembly, Outstanding citizen in 2003, and Pioneer of the Year in 2011. Roylene served on the McCamey Rebekah Lodge since 1968, Past Noble Grand, Past District Deputy President, American Legion Auxillay President since 1970, Lions Club and the Upton County historical commission since 1985. Roylene graced the citizens of McCamey with her talent and love of writing with her "as the Windmills turn" article every week in the McCamey Newspaper. "As the Windmills turn" featured true McCamey history, by Roylene, whether writing about a McCamey Landmark, citizen or just taking a peek in her personal life with stories from the "good ole days". Roylene experienced her own historical moment in 2008, when her residence in McCamey received a historical Marker for the TP Tavern, a popular nightclub/dancehall her Grandfather Jim Sloan operated and owned. Popular names such as Ernest Tubb, Bob Willis, Hank Thompson and Lawerance Welk played at the TP before hitting it big time. When Roylene wasn't receiving an achievement or writing a story, she was enjoying her family and friends. She loved being a "Nana" to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, telling stories to everyone she encountered and watching the "Grand ole Opry and "Golden Girls" with her loved ones. Roylene will not only be missed by family and friends, but by the town of McCamey as well, as long as the windmills turn.
The viewing will be at the Shaffer-Nichols Funeral home in McCamey on Tuesday, October 29th 9am-8pm. Family will be at the funeral home from 6pm-8pm for any visitors. Funeral services will be at the East Side Baptist Church in McCamey on Wednesday October 30th at 2pm, presided by Rev. Murray Sauders. Pallbearers include; Kerry McIlhaney, Chuck "Tookie" Flora, Billy Flora, Cody Zamora, Dan Brown, Carlos Holguin, Gilbert Bustos and John Paul Jones. Flower arrangements and orders are being handled through Wild about Flowers in McCamey.
