Paul Wallace “Wally” Johnson Jr. was born December 15, 1943 in Slaton Texas to Paul Sr. and Melba Estelle McHaney Johnson. He grew up in San Angelo where he played football at Central High School. Wally attended college on a football scholarship at West Texas State in Canyon. While enrolled there he pledged the Kappa Alpha fraternity, was in ROTC and received a degree in Business/Finance. Prior to graduation he married his high school sweetheart, Judy Johnson, with whom he had a son, Kevin, and daughter, Amy. After graduation in 1967 he went
straight into his service duty in the United States Army. Wally served in Germany and then in Vietnam. Upon returning to civilian life, he started his career in the banking industry in San Angelo. Later, he would be promoted up through the ranks in Big Lake and in Rankin where he served as bank President for 20 years. He married Kay Bolen in 1979 and they lived in Rankin for the next 40 years. Together they raised Kay’s son Jimmy and their youngest son, Coley. Wally was a member of the First Baptist Church in Rankin for over 40 years where he served as Deacon and Treasurer. He also served on the school board and was a member of the Lions Club. Wally and Kay were married for 43 years, until he passed on to be with our Lord on Sept. 26, 2022. He had obtained disabled veteran status after many years of battling diabetes and heart failure attributed to his exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam.
Wally lived his last few years in Abilene where they moved to be closer to family. Wally loved his grandkids and was able to meet his first great grandchild, Jagger, in 2021. As everyone close to him knew, Wally loved his hobbies. He started with rock collecting and then tried his hand at leatherworking, silversmithing, antiquing, motorcycling, marble collecting & wood working… just to name the big ones. There were many years when he would make hand made Christmas ornaments for everyone in the family.
Wally was preceded in death by his parents Paul Sr. & Melba Johnson, his step mother Syree Fox Johnson, his brother in law John Holmes and sister in law Pat Bolen.
Wally is survived by his wife Kay, his son Kevin & wife Stephanie of Abilene, his daughter Amy Wheat & Lupe Torres of Robert Lee, his step son Jimmy Low and wife Lori of Northlake, his son Coley & wife Kelley of Rockwall, his sister Sandra Holmes of Early, his brother David Mack & wife Lynn of San Angelo, his sister Jan Adams & husband Henri of Miles, his brother in law Bill Bolen of San Angelo, and his brother in law Roy Bolen and wife Debbie of Midland. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Zachary Johnson, Ezekiel Johnson, Noah Johnson, JT Cary & his wife Lisa, Grace Cary, Faith Cary, Ashlie Wheat, Jessica Martinez & her husband Travis (great grandson, Jagger), Anton Low, Presley Low, Gavin Johnson, Asher Johnson, and Avery Johnson.
Wally will be buried at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene (7457 West Lake Rd. Abilene, TX) on Oct. 14th at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers please make any donations to the DAV(Disabled American Veterans) at dav.org.
