Monty David King

Monty David King, 56, passed away on Monday, April 15, 2024, at his home in Crane.

Monty was born to Marvin and Jo Ann King on October 4, 1967, in Crane, Texas.  He was a 1987 graduate of Crane High School.

Monty grew up on the Damron Pig Farm southeast of Crane, where he ran around and built all sorts of things with his brother Cody. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and during high school worked at Fox Thriftway, Koontz’s Gulf Service, and Popes Automotive.

Monty started riding bulls in junior high school. He had a passion for riding bulls and was very successful winning many area rodeos and loved to tell of how he out scored Jim Sharp once. The last bull he rode was at the Sanderson Rodeo in High School. The name of the bull was Shockwave and it was recently retired from the NFR.

Monty moved to Parachute, Colorado to work for Elkhorn Construction in March of 1988, where he met the love of his life, Barbara of 20 years and started his family. He traveled around the states of Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas and New Mexico working in plant construction. His brother Cody joined him in 1989 in Evanston, Wyoming.

He ended his career in plant construction in 1998 to be close to his family back in Crane and went to work for himself at Monty King Construction. He worked locally for many people.

He was offered a career with the Crane Independent School District in 2002 as a welder for the Maintenance Department. With his background in construction, he was able to bid, design, fabricate and build many metal buildings, among other structures that still stand today at CISD. He worked his way up to become the Director of Physical Services. He cared greatly for the students’ safety and security at CISD. He would often be up early checking highway conditions for bus travel on inclement weather days. He was very successful and diligent in dealing with adverse situations. Monty was very instrumental in managing big projects for CISD including the new elementary school and teacher housing among many others. He worked closely with all his personal contacts. After 18 years of service, he decided to retire from CISD in 2020.

Monty enjoyed golf the last couple years of his life. He loved to cook and entertain friends and family. He built a large cooker for CISD and enjoyed cooking meals for school functions.

He really enjoyed watching old western movies with John Wayne, Robert Duvall & Sam Elliot.

Monty loved a good joke, fishing, and good music and especially live music at home.

He was preceded in death by Grandmother Dorris King of Imperial TX, Uncle Bruce King of Ft. Stockton TX, Great Aunt Edna Ory of Eldorado TX, Papa and Grandma John and Tiney Moore of Girvin TX, Step-brother Jon Eric Seilhant of McCamey TX.

A quote that was special to Monty “Courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway” -John Wayne

Monty’s quote:

“My favorite hobby was entertaining and cooking for family and friends at my home made brain fart bar in the back Cocina Del Rey. Thanks for all yalls help and support through it all.”

He is remembered by his immediate family as a fun loving and kindhearted man with a witty humor, who taught us how to have a great work ethic and always do our best. He is loved more than he knew.
