MATTIE ZUE FEATHERSTON HILL
IRAAN: Mattie Zue Featherston Hill, 92 years old, passed away in Fort Worth, Texas on Saturday, June 27, 2009.
Her funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Iraan, Texas at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 with Reverend Mike Wright officiating. Burial will follow in the Restland Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home.
Mattie was born May 18, 1917 on a ranch in Coleman County, Texas. She was the daughter of Gus and Nettie (Carter) Featherson. She learned to cook early and at age 12, she was baking four or five pies daily for family and ranch hands. After graduation from Whon High School, she married Homer Hill on December 24, 1934. They moved from Coleman County to Iraan in 1943.
She loved her home in Iraan, which was originally a church renovated into a house. She enjoyed talking about the Indian grindstones on each side of her back door. Her father had brought them from his ranch in New Mexico and had them rocked into the house. Her hospitality was well known. Her two children grew up there and her grandchildren often came for extended visits. The class of '58 and friends congregated there each year during homecoming.
Mattie Zue owned and operated Vanity Beauty Center with her sister, Imogene Bryan Myers, for 21 years. She nursed at Iraan General Hospital under Dr. Edwin Franks for 18 years. She moved to Fort Worth in 2001 to be near her daughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Hill; her grandson, Jay Hill; her brothers, Bill Featherston, and Pete Featherston; her sisters, Alta Blackwell, Tek Brusenhan, Wynona Featherston, and Imogene Bryan Myers.
She is survived by her children: Bob Hill and his wife Shirley; Betty Hill McCray and her husband, Ken; her grandchildren: Lori Canon, James and Kyle English, and Sherry Kolstad; and her step-grandchildren: Debbi Henson, Kelli Smith, Amy Woods, and Mark McCray; her great-grandchildren: Scamper Hill, Madison, Brooklyn and Cason Kolstad, and Aterah English; and many very special nephews and nieces; and many wonderful friends.
Her memory may be honored by memorials to the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 575, Iraan, TX 79744; or to the Iraan Ex-Students Association, P.O. Box 1084, Iraan, TX 79744.
