Margaret L. Tanner, formally of Crane, Texas passed away peacefully with her daughter by her side, in Brenham, Texas on 1 Dec. 2015.
Margaret was born 13 Dec. 1920 in Naberton, Louisiana to Edgar Eugene Johnson Sr. and Exa May Johnson. She graduated from Grand Bayou High School. When Leston H. Tanner, her high school classmate, returned home at the end of WWII, they were married on 16 May 1945 at the Harmon Baptist Church in Harmon Louisiana. Soon after marriage they moved to Crane, Texas, where Leston became employed by Gulf Oil Corp. She joined The First Baptist Church in Crane, when it was located on McElroy St. where she started teaching Beginners Sunday School Class and continued to do so for 41 years. She was a stay-at-home devoted mother to her two children. After her children were grown, she ran a day care for young children at her home for several years. She was a resident of Crane for 67 years, then because of health problems, moved to Independence, Texas to live with her daughter Brenda Gallaway.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 57 years Leston H. Tanner, her parents, two sisters and one brother. She is survived by a brother, Edgar Eugene Johnson Jr. of El Dorado, Arkansas; daughter, Brenda Gallaway and husband Mike of Independence, TX; son, Harold W. Tanner and wife Lou of Odessa, TX; granddaughter, Shelly Bullock of Winnsboro, TX; granddaughter, Jodi Wilson of Katy, TX; grandson, Michael Gallaway of College Station, TX; four great grandchildren, 1 niece and 3 nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Crane or a charity of your choice
The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 6 pm until 8 pm. A graveside service will be held at 2 pm on Friday, 4 Dec. 2015, at the Crane County Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home.
