Lloyd Dixon, 103 of DeLeon, passed away on Friday, April 15, 2011 at the Crane Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
The family will be receiving friends at the Nowlin-Anders Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00am on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at the Nowlin-Anders Funeral Home Chapel in DeLeon. Burial will follow in the Victor Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Nowlin-Anders Funeral Home of DeLeon, and Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home of Crane.
Lloyd was born on February 3, 1908 in Victor, Texas to Luther and Etta Elrod Dixon. He had been a resident of DeLeon most all of his life. Lloyd graduated from DeLeon High School in 1928 and from Tarleton State University in 1931. He was the oldest living graduate at 103.
Lloyd was a distinguished World War II Honoree. He entered the service on October 28, 1940 at Randolph Field, Texas where he completed basic training. He was subsequently assigned to Sheppard Field, Texas, Albuquerque Air Field, New Mexico, and Jefferson Barracks, Missouri before deployment to China-Burma-India Theater of operations. Lloyd was assigned to the 1100th quartermaster corps, the 51st service group in India as Clerk General. He initiated and answered correspondence, kept records, and files. Lloyd supervised up to 100 men in various sections and was responsible for efficient performance in duties of each section. He prepared payrolls, made entries in service records, took care of all allotments made by servicemen. Lloyd was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific-Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the WWII Victory Metal. He served five years and twelve days before being discharged as a technical sergeant on November 9, 1945 at Camp Fannin, Texas.
Lloyd was retired from the Texas Department of Transportation as an Engineer. He served as the Treasurer for United States Postal Service Credit Union of Odessa, Texas. He was also a member of the Mason Lodge. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Etta Dixon; his wife, Travis Dixon; two sons, Jerry Smitherman and Roy Smitherman; a grandson, Randy Lea Kea; one brother, Ira Dixon; and a sister, Grace Warren.
Survivors include his daughter, Ellen Kea of Crane; two daughter-in-laws, Betty Smitherman of Kismet, Kansas and Nancy Smitherman of DeLeon, Texas; 7 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great grandchildren; a niece, Bobbie Brownlee of Granbury, Texas; and a nephew, Bennie Warren of Conroe, Texas.
