Jose H. Melendez, 84, of McCamey, passed away on Thursday, December 16, 2021, in Midland.
Jose immigrated to the US in the late 1950’s, where he worked at farms in California and Colorado, before settling in McCamey, TX. There he met Antonia Rejino. He married Antonia, started a family, and later built their family home with his bare hands. Always surrounded by friends and family, they enjoyed 57 years together. Although Jose was a self-educated man, he worked with several oilfield companies throughout his years in the oil patch. He also went on to become extremely competent in welding, carpentry, and other various oilfield specialties. He loves horses and enjoyed watching his kids play sports. He was always known as a sincere man. Quiet, peaceful, hard working, and would help anyone in need. Jose was a loving husband, father, brother, padrino, uncle, and friend. However, his favorite title was Apa, the name given to him by his grandchildren, and later his great grandchildren. Luckily he was able to spend his final years surrounded by his babies. He was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew him.
Jose was preceded by his parents, Epifanio and Julia Melendez; three brothers, Juan, Lorenzo, and Soccorro; four sisters, Maria, Esperanza, Francisca, and Jesusa; his loving wife, Antonia Melendez; daughter, Rosalinda Melendez; and son, Johnny Joe Melendez.
Jose is survived by his sons, Joel Melendez of Ft. Stockton, TX, and Robert Melendez of Midland, TX; sister, Blasa Juarez of McCamey; brother, Manuel Melendez of McCamey; eight grandchildren, Christal Hernandez, Angela Hernandez, and Miguel Hernandez, all of Odessa, Mirella Melendez, Marissa Melendez, J. J. Melendez, and Alex Melendez, all of Midland, and Jon Michael Melendez of Dallas; and five great grandchildren, Jaime Melendez, Jessica Sauceda, and Viviana Sauceda, all of Midland, and Victoria Hernandez and Leanna Hernandez, both of Odessa.
