Joan Hogan
November 15, 1925 — June 19, 2011
On June 19, 2011, surrounded by her family, Joan Hogan went to be with her Lord and Savior after a lengthy illness. Joan was born November 15, 1925 to John M. and Zora Felder. She graduated from Texas Women’s University in 1946.
Joan had been playing the piano or organ in church since she was 11 years old living in Aransas Pass. Joan helped establish the Presbyterian Church in Crane and served as choir director there until the church disbanded. She started attending the First United Methodist Church in Crane in 1969 and became a member in 1972. Joan played piano or organ in church when the regular musicians were away. When she wasn’t filling in as pianist or organist, she was in the choir. She also served as choir director for 8 years and finally as regular organist. Joan has played for many, many weddings and funeral at the church. She has also served as president of the Women of Church and was on the board for several years. Joan has also been the cornerstone of the telephone prayer chain for many years. Joan was chosen as a pillar of First United Methodist Church of Crane, where she served as a teacher and mentor for many years. Joan also gave piano lessons and was a retired teacher.
She was active with the retired teachers association. Joan influenced many lives in Eastern Star, AAUW, Methodist Women, and as a Girl Scout leader. She loved her family as well as music, reading, crossword puzzles, crocheting, knitting, camping and hiking.
Joan was a “True Lady†with class in every way. She tried to instill this in her daughters and granddaughters.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Helen Gottfried, and a granddaughter, Jonna Sue Anderson.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Tom Hogan, Jr. and children, Cecile Elkins and husband, Richard of Odessa, Teresa Anderson of Crane, Tom Hogan III of Andrews, and Felder Hogan and wife, Ann, of Andrews, 9 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at the First United Methodist in Crane with Reverend Blaine Wimberly officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home of Crane.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Home Hospice, the American Cancer Society, or to a charity of your choice.
