JAMES D. "JIM" STEWART
CRANE: James D. "Jim" Stewart, 84 of Crane, passed away on Sunday, February 27, 2011 at the Crane Memorial Hospital.
Memorial services will be held at 4:30 pm on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at the Crane High School Auditorium with Reverend Dr. Jim Miles officiating.
A second Memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, March 3, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Stockton with Reverend Dr. Jim Miles officiating. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home of Crane.
Jim was born on September 29, 1926 in Breckenridge, Texas to James Thomas and Edith Lucille Toland Stewart. Jim attended Crane High School and graduated from Breckenridge High School. He received a Bachelors of Science degree from Hardin Simmons University; and his Masters degree from Eastern New Mexico University. Jim was a US Navy Veteran and served in WWII in the Pacific Theater.
Jim married Frances Smith on August 20, 1948 in Abilene, Texas. Jim taught in Artesia, New Mexico for one year and in Hobbs, New Mexico for thirty years. He served as the President of the New Mexico Classroom Teachers Association; President of the New Mexico Educators Association; and was a member of the Board of Directors of the National Education Association.
Jim and Frances worked as volunteer park rangers in the Big Bend National Park for thirteen years.
Jim was an ordained Deacon and ordained Elder in the Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his loving wife, Frances Stewart of Crane; his two daughters, Priscilla Covey and her husband Hank of Quartzsite, AZ, and Lucille Vaughan and her husband Steve of Midland, TX; one son, Dr. Thomas Stewart and his wife Jill of Edgewood, NM; 10 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Crane ISD Student Activity Fund.
