GILFORD CALVIN ROBERTS
1912 - 2009
McCAMEY: Gilford Calvin Roberts died in McCamey hospital on May 14, 2009. He was born in Glen Cove, Texas on May 1, 1912 to Finis Guy Roberts and Ruth Smith Roberts.
Mr. Roberts married Louise Shelton in Westbrook, Texas on February 8, 1936, they celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary.
Mr. Roberts worked for Shell Pipeline for 39 years and five months. He was a dispatcher at McCamey when he retired. He enjoyed his years with Shell and made many friends among his co-workers. His hobbies were fishing, traveling and photography. He retired at the age of sixty- two so he and Louise could travel. He never tired of fishing for trout in Colorado and the North West, and photographing our beautiful country.
Mr. Roberts was a member of the Church of Christ. He obeyed the Gospel and was baptized when he was twelve years old. He was a faithful christian all of his life.
He served his country in World War II as a M o M M 2 C in the Coast Guard. He was stationed in Florida until the Coast Guard sent him to General Motors Institute in Flint Michigan for a course of instruction in Naval Amp. Diesel Engines. For a short time he was on the destroyer U. S. Falgout, and then assigned to convoy duty to Oran, North Africa for the rest of his time in the military. He was honorably discharged in September of 1945 after serving three years and 14 days.
Mr. Roberts is survived by his wife Louise Roberts; niece Rita Draper and family; Cousin Rita Kutzley and family; niece Prissy Daniel and family; cousin Clark Savage and family; and sister-in-law, Virginia Martens.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at the Church of Christ in McCamey. Burial will follow in the Resthaven Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Lenn Daniel, Jay Daniel, James Johnson, David Cross, Donnie Anderson, and David Adler. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of the McCamey Church of Christ and the retired men and women of Shell Pipeline.
In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Veterans Memorial in McCamey for the men and women who served in the military. Donations may be sent to Roylene Davis, P.O. Box 955-McCamey, Texas 79752. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Domingo and nurses and staff at the McCamey Hospital.
