Forest Pete Mitchel, 75, of McCamey, passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 peacefully at his home in McCamey.

The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home on Friday, December 16, 2011, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at the Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Byron Bitner officiating. Burial will follow in the Resthaven Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Gary Wade, Coy Lynch, Steven Lynch, Carl Rice, Dennis Harper, Roger Wolfe, Daniel Hejny, and Glen Smart. Honorary Pallbearers will be Coy Coe, Lola Chavez, and Wayne Smith.

Pete was born on December 31, 1935 in Salt Gap, Texas to Robert Lee and Mary Ruth Pierce Mitchel. Pete attended school in Brady, Texas, graduating in 1954. He joined the Army National Guard and served 8 years, then served as a States Guardsman for 20 years. He served the community of McCamey as a volunteer firefighter for over 20 years. Pete worked at Holsum Bread Company for 22 years until he became disabled in February of 1996 and was forced into early retirement.
Being the youngest of 11 children, Pete excelled at everything he set his mind to. He was a great baseball, softball, and football player. He was the only member of the Brady football team to have played varsity football all four years of high school, which was very rare at the time. He was an avid hunter from a very young man until his passing. His favorite pastime was playing golf and enjoying the company of his close friends.

Pete was preceded in death by his daughter, Tamela Mitchel on January 12, 2009; his parents; and siblings.

He is survived by his son, James Mitchel and his wife Diana of Gladewater, Texas; his daughter, Pamela Adams and her husband Rob of McCamey; his brother, Buford Mitchel and his wife Betty of Rockdale, Texas; seven grandchildren, Angelique, Erin, Naomi, Shelbi, McKenna, Gunner, and Avery; three great grandchildren, Mathis, Maddison, and Oakley; and numerous nieces and nephews.
