ELSIE LEONA SCONIERS

IRAAN: Elsie Leona Sconiers, 98, of Iraan, Texas, passed away on Monday, July 14, at Iraan General Hospital. Graveside services will be held 10:00a.m., Thursday, July 17th, at the Iraan Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home.

Elsie was born in Seminole, OK on June 4th, 1910, to Emery and Ethel Magruder. Growing up, Elsie learned to keep books for the lumber yard where her father worked and a nearby gas station. She would also help her mother around the house where she learned to cook and sew; skills that would come in handy in her lifetime. In her early years, she would learn to play the zither, the piano, and could also sing.

In 1933, she would meet and marry Dewey Sconiers. They were wed on December 31st of 1933 in Oklahoma and moved the very next day to Royalty, Texas, to work in the oil field. They moved around West Texas, living in Wink, Mentone, Guadalupe Peak, Odessa, and Big Lake. They would finally settle down in Iraan in 1947, where they would spend the rest of their lives. During those years, Elsie ran a boarding house and became quite well known as a talented cook. She could cook anything and cook it well. She would later own restaurants in Big Lake and Iraan in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. However, her main concern was her family, of three children, and her home.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Dewey Sconiers, who died in November of 1999, her daughter, Leta Pace, grandson, Mark Simon, and Bill Simon, son-in-law.
She is survived by her daughter, Velda Simon of Kermit, son and daughter-in-law, Neal and Alicia Sconiers of Iraan, sister and brother, Essie Turner and Emery Magruder of Seminole OK, and son-in-law, Floyd Pace of Tyler. Elsie is survived by nine grandchildren; Brenda and husband, John McDiffitt of Granbury, Ralph and wife, Kim Simon of Odessa, Debra and husband, Mike Kimball of Tyler, Karen and husband Jim Rommel of Allen, Sarah and husband, Wendell Labat of Tyler, Necia and husband, Ridge Graham of Iraan, John and wife Lee Anne Sconiers of Spring Branch, Joe and wife, Kathy Sconiers of Abilene, and Sandra Sconiers of Lubbock. She is also survived by great grandchildren; Jade Jones of Midland, Chelsey Simon of Denver City, Tracy Simon of Austin, and Jaci Simon of Odessa, Carly Kimball of Tyler, Pace, Rachel and Leah Rommel of Allen, Rachel Labat of Tyler, Jacob Graham of Iraan, Cain and Trent Sconiers, of Spring Branch, Morgan and Peytan Sconiers of Abilene, and two great-great grandchildren, Emily and Kora Simon of Denver City.
The family would like to thank the nurses, doctors, and staff of the Iraan General Hospital, who have taken such good care of Elsie the past several years. We appreciate the love, care and kind attention that you have given to our mother and grandmother during her stay there.
