Edith Laura Kelley Salyer passed away in Fredericksburg, Texas, on Sunday, May 16, 2010. Her family will be receiving friends at the Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home in Crane on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, May 20, 2010, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of the Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home, with interment in the Crane Memorial Cemetery.
Edith was born to parents Dr. William Nathan Kelley and Nettie Laura Kelley in Valley View, Texas, on December 6, 1918. The family moved to Balmorhea, Texas, when she was still a child. This was her home until she married Gene Harold Salyer on March 10, 1937. Edith met Gene at Sul Ross State Teachers College in Alpine, Texas, and she eventually received a Master's Degree from this institution.
Prior to World War II, she, Gene, her parents, and other family members relocated to Terlingua, Texas, where she served as postmistress and administrative assistant to Chisos Mining Company owner Mr. Howard E. Perry. At the onset of WWII, Edith and Gene enlisted in the U.S. Army. She was stationed in California and became a physical therapist. At the end of WWII, Edith and Gene made their home in Crane, Texas, where they were members of the First Baptist Church, and where she taught school for approximately 40 years. After her retirement, they moved to Fredericksburg and joined Faith Baptist Church.
Throughout her life she maintained a deep love for the Davis Mountains and the Big Bend, and many friends have delighted in her memories and stories of this country. Several years ago she was interviewed by the Terlingua Preservation Society, and that interview is housed in perpetuity in the Texas State Capitol.
She was a member of the national teacher's sororities Kappa Delta Pi and Delta Kappa Gamma, Texas State Teachers Association, and a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She is survived by daughters Sharon Marcotte of Harper and Karen Bizzak of Burnet; son-in-law, Hal Brown of Burnet; and granddaughters Jamie Bizzak of Wilton, Conn. and Jessica Marie Savonell and husband Tracey of Oakland, Calif.; grandson Jeffrey Bizzak of Greensburg, Pa.; sister-in-law, Ellen Kelley of Fort Davis, Texas; extended family member Rain Hobson of Harper; numerous nephews and nieces; and countless friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. William and Nettie Kelley; two brothers, J. Charles Kelley and Ernest Kelley; one sister, Pearl Kelley Pittman; her husband, Gene Harold Salyer; and an infant son, Gene Michael Salyer.
Her life touched and changed the lives of so many people, especially the hundreds of first graders under her tutelage for almost four decades.
She will be greatly missed.
Memorials may be made to the National Arthritis Foundation, the Deafness Research Foundation, of the charity of choice.
