DOUGLAS HAYES DAMRON

CRANE: Douglas Hayes Damron, 77 of Crane, passed away on Saturday, November 27, 2010 at the Home Hospice House in Odessa.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at the Mary Street Church of Christ with Minister Mike Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Crane County Cemetery with arrangements under the care and direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home.

Doug was born on March 6, 1933 in Eastland County on a share cropping farm. He moved to Crane at six months of age when his Dad went to work for Gulf Oil Corporation. Doug attended Crane Schools, graduating in 1952, with a close group of friends. He always said, "Crane was a wonderful place for a kid to grow in." Doug spent his entire life in Crane, except for short periods of time when his Dad was following work in the war production plants, and the four years that he served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was extremely proud of his service time.

Doug returned to Crane to join his Dad and work with him in the Damron Welding Business. After buying his Dad out, he continued to work in the oil field welding business for some 20 odd years. He was nicknamed "dobber" and respected for his quality work and fun character. He sold the welding business to take the job of Crane City Manager. His love for the community of Crane was proved by 25 years of service, years on the city council, mayor pro-tem, Mayor, City Manager, Chamber of Commerce, Chuckles Gang, volunteer fireman, and Crane County Cow Chunking Champion. If Crane was having an event, he was there helping or supporting. His daughter said, "he was the family's number one fan." While working and volunteering, he also found time to learn how to fly and get his pilot's license. He owned three different planes and flew many of Dr. Maynard's planes on trips with him. Also after 17 years of working and going to school, he received a degree in Industrial Arts from the University of North Texas.

The University of Texas approached him while he was city manager, to work for them, and there was where he found the work he loved. He was a field representative, looking after six counties of the 19 West Texas counties. Often he would say, "They pay me to drive around in a truck and talk to people, and they certainly get their money's worth." With that work, he was a member of the International Right of Way Association, going all over the U.S. and Canada, making many dear friends.

After retiring with 29 years of service with the University, he continued his love of travel, as he and Betty traveled all over the world, much of Europe, China, and Africa. Doug was always ready to get in the car for a road trip, and take any little road he saw.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Damron of Crane; three sons, Kirk Damron of Broken Arrow, OK, Kenneth Doss and his wife Connie of Clyde, TX, and Bob Doss of Denver, CO; three daughters, Janan Boyter and her husband Rayce of Woodland, TX, Barbara Cook and her husband James of Mesquite, TX, and Trish Carrasco and her husband Abel of Odessa, TX; a sister, Arva Bea Shira of Tom Ball, TX; and 11 grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Mary Street Church of Christ in Crane; or the Hospice House, 903 N. Sam Houston, Odessa, Texas 79761.

A special "Thank You" to Dr. Joel Adams; the staff from Hospice House; and many good friends.
