CRANE: Dorothy B. Word, 82 of Imperial, passed away on Monday, February 2, 2009 at the Regency Hospital in Odessa.

Dorothy was born on March 14, 1926 in Plano, Texas to John William and Sallie Mabel Sandifer Ball. She married William Erby Word on June 17, 1955 in Eunice, New Mexico. Dorothy graduated in 1948 from North Texas State University with a Bachelors Degree in business. She received her teaching certificate in 1969 from Eastern New Mexico State University.

Dorothy was a High School Business Teacher at Buena Vista ISD, before her retirement in 1985. She was a longtime resident of Imperial; and was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, William Erby Word in 1984; a daughter, Janis Burger in 2000; her parents; one brother, James Ball; and two sisters, Mary Ball, and Wynnie Ball.

Dorothy is survived by three daughters, Mary O'Rourke and her husband Steve of Imperial, Patty Wilkinson and her husband Donald of Marshall, VA, and Kathy Lewis and her husband Bryan of Odessa; a son-in-law, Dale Burger of Lucas, TX; eleven grandchildren, Jason Wilkinson and his wife Amber of Sahuarita, AR, Sherry O'Rourke of Katy, TX, Shelly O'Rourke of Happy, TX, Clayton Wilkinson and his wife Julia of Maricopa, AZ, Blaine Wilkinson of Charleston, SC, Nicholas Burger, Kevin Burger and Travis Burger all of Lucas, TX, Laura Lewis of San Angelo, TX, Kaci Lewis, and Brandon Lewis of Odessa, TX; three great grandchildren, Layla Wilkinson, Jaden Wilkinson, and Seth Wilkinson; one brother, Clyde Ball of Austin, TX; two sisters, Sally Sims of Dallas, TX, and Cappy Turner of Mount Vernon, Maine.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at the Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home Chapel in Crane with Reverend Blaine Wimberly officiating. Her grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Burial will follow in the Imperial Cemetery with arrangements under the care and direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home.
