Charles H. Davis, Jr., 90. of McCamey, Texas (formerly from Hopkins, Ml) went home to be with the Lord on Aug. 9th, 2023, at the McCamey Convalescent Center.
Charles was born on Feb. 1, 1933 to Charles H. Davis, Sr. and Minerva Davis in Princeton, Indiana. He attended Hopkins High School in Hopkins, Michigan. In school he enjoyed playing sports, lettering in football, basketball, and baseball. He actually played on the Hopkins High inaugural football team in 1949, in the days of leather helmets and no face masks. He liked to say (quoting comedian Jerry Clower) that he "was the man what run with the football". After High School, he joined the US Navy and served his country honorably in the Naval Air Force as an aircraft maintenance crew chief for 4 years, during the Korean War. He married his High School sweetheart, Adelia (Mort) on Aug. 15, 1953. Adelia preceded Charles in death in March, 2023 - they were married for 69 years. Together, they raised four boys: Bob, Jim, Alan and Kevin. Charles loved to take the boys hunting and fishing. He also taught his boys the value of hard work on the farm as they were growing up.
Charles was employed by Bell Telephone for four decades, first starting in Michigan and then transferring to Texas, retiring in 1994. He was a member Bethel Baptist Church in McCamey, Texas. Even in retirement, he remained busy, always having a new project to tackle and staying very active late into his 80's. He also faithfully cared for his wife Adelia over the last few years as her health was declining.
Charles was preceded in death by his wife Adelia (nee Mort), his parents Charles and Minerva Davis, brothers Russell Davis, Omer Wilson, Leck Wilson, Bill Wilson & Bob Wilson, sister June Krug, and grandson Mason Hoskinson.
Charles is survived by sons: Robert (Bettie) Davis of Hudsonville, Ml, James (Melodie) Davis of Dorr, Ml, Alan (Elaine) Davis of Midland, TX and Kevin (Angelica) Davis of McCamey, Texas; grandchildren: Jonathan Davis, Jesse Davis, Ethan Davis, Micah Davis, Jennifer Hoskinson Beckett, Tara Davis, Cody Davis, Scott Davis, Dallas Davis, Austin Davis, Avery Davis, Chayton Davis, Nolan Davis and Arwen Davis; great grandchildren: Joshua Davis, Isabella Davis, Finley Daniels, Calliope Davis, Lamont Davis, Audrina Davis, Karsen Davis, Kaden Davis, Dezirae Davis, Remi Davis, Piper Davis, Parker Davis, and his 3 sisters Joy Jones, Imogene Mulder and Judy Kennedy.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 17th, 2023 from 1pm until 7pm at the Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home in McCamey, Texas. Services will be held in the chapel at 10am on Friday, August 18th. Burial will be at the Resthaven Cemetery.
