Dr. Billy Joe Maynard, 88 of Crane, passed away on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at the Crane Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, May 29, 2011 at the Mary Street Church of Christ with Minister Mike Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Crane County Cemetery with arrangements under the care and direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home.

Dr. Maynard was born in Ranger, Texas on May 10, 1923 and moved to Crane in 1929 with his parents, Realous Lydelia and Buelah Maye Maynard after Crane was founded in 1927. He attended Crane Schools, graduating in 1941. He attended Abilene Christian College from 1941 to 1943 where he played football and baseball on a scholarship.

During WWII he joined the Naval Reserves and entered Medical School at the University of Arkansas and earned his M.D. in 1947. Following his internship, Dr. Maynard returned to Crane in 1948 with his family to begin his medical practice. In 1951 he was drafted into the Army Medical Corp as a 1st Lieutenant and was stationed in Germany. In 1953, Dr. Maynard returned to Crane to restart his general medical practice and continued until his retirement in 1993. In Crane, he was active in Noon Lions Club; City Council and one term as Mayor. In his free time, Dr. Maynard enjoyed golf and flying as a private pilot.

Survivors include his wife, Frankie Maynard of Crane; two sons, Steve Maynard of Plano, Texas and Dr. Tim Maynard of Gatesville, Texas; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren; two nieces; one nephew; and several great nieces and great nephews.
