Bennie Curfew, 99, of Crane, Texas passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2013.
Graveside services will be held at 12 noon, Saturday, May 4, 2013, at the Crane County Cemetery in Crane, Texas with Tommy Parker officiating. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home.
Bennie was born June 20, 1913, in Eastland, Texas to Julius G. and Margaret A. Cross.
Bennie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband James "Slim" Curfew, two
sisters and three brothers, grandsons James "Scooter" Curfew, Joshua Cade Curfew,
and Joseph Cole Curfew, granddaughter Jade Elyse Curfew and great grandson Holden Dale Curfew.
Bennie is survived by her children Spud and Jerry Curfew of Crane, Texas, Jim and
Kathie Curfew, of Granbury, Texas; grandchildren Reese and Marsha Curfew of
Possum Kingdom Lake, Texas, Cristina and Mark Velasquez of Odessa, Texas, and
John Curfew of Carrollton, Texas; great-grandchildren Paige Velasquez of Austin,
Texas, Halen Velasquez of Odessa, Texas, Tyler, Tanner and Tate Curfew of
Carrollton, Texas, and Jarrett Curfew of Yuba City, CA; sisters Norene Murphy and
Rosa Starnes; brothers, Ronald, Vernon and Glen Cross.
Bennie moved to Crane, Texas when it was still a "tent city". Her life in Crane began
when she joined an aunt and sister as the first telephone operators in Crane. She
eventually became a nurse at the Robinson Clinic and subsequently delivered many
Crane residents that made their appearance before a doctor could arrive. Later on in
life she spent many years as an agent for the San Angelo Standard Times. Bennie
enjoyed teaching a Women's Sunday School Class at Crane United Methodist Church
for many years.
